Church of saint marton

The name of the village of Bogács appears in a written document for the first time in 1248, when the church built in honor of Saint George already stood.
The village was then the property of nobles, which in the 16th century it will initially be owned by the Eger chapter.

Today’s church was built on the foundations of an older church, the exact time of construction is unknown. On May 3, 1568, an inventory was prepared for the chapter of Eger, which mentions that even then the patron saint of the church was St. George. In addition to the main altar, there are two side altars, one in honor of St. Michael, the other in honor of All Saints. There are two names, unknown to us, carved in stone on the wall of the church: Navay Miklós 1671, this is located near the wall of the sacristy. The other on the north side: Zakariás Rabróczki.

The XIII. century church of Romanian origin in the XIV. It was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 19th century. During its restoration as a monument in 1958, details from the Romanian era were discovered. It was built of locally quarried, carved reddish stone.

The most ancient part of the church is probably the sacristy, the chancel, the tower up to a certain height and the chapel. Parallel to the north wall of the church, in a straight line from the northwest corner of the sacristy to the tower, you can see the remains of a wall in the ground – perhaps the church had several naves, but it is also possible that a monastery once stood next to it.

The XVIII. century, the condition of the church deteriorated, the ceiling of the nave received new beams during the renovation carried out in 1800, and then scarf stone was added to the floor. When they were laid down and the foundations of the choir were excavated, they found a walled cavity with human bones in it.
